InfraWorks 360 2017.2 Point Cloud Terrain Part II

I ran a test of something that I recently learned.

The current version of Autodesk InfraWorks 360 can export, from a point cloud that is brought into it, just the points that the "Point Cloud Terrain" capability (see Image 1) identifies as "Ground" points (see Image 2)

In Image 2 we see where we can "Generate Data" - "Key Points" and then "Export to RCS" (a new point cloud) "Only ground points". That creates a new simplified point cloud.

I then compared the volumes of the original point cloud with the one that was just the "Key Points" in Civil 3D (see image 3).
Image 3

The volumes generated by these two surfaces differed by only 0.04%.

The original surface contained 1,242,237 points. The simplified surface contained 6,627 points, or 0.53% of the original size. in other words, the original was 187.4 times bigger.

I believe that this workflow will allow us to create surfaces from "surface only" point clouds that are still accurate, but significantly more lightweight for terrain creation and analysis.

I hope that you found this useful.

InfraWorks 360 2017.2 Point Cloud Terrain

My current favorite NEW capability introduced by Autodesk InfraWorks 360 2017.2 is the "Point Cloud Terrain" feature (see image).
Point Cloud commands

It attempts to classify an existing point cloud into terrain points and vertical feature points. Once completed, we can then used the "Point Cloud Themes" to create a "Classification" theme which is much more visually understandable, particularly when the point cloud does not have RGB values (see image below).

The "Point Cloud Modeling" feature then attempts to automatically place 3D models where the point cloud resembles them. If another object is needed we can manually replace the default 3D object.

Altogether, these features allow us to create detailed terrain and place 3d objects more quickly in Autodesk InfraWorks 360.

Autodesk InfraWorks 360 2017.2 Update Available

I just noticed in my Autodesk Desktop App that an update to my Autodesk InfraWorks 360 2017 was available. It is listed as 2017.2 (see image).

There are a few ways to get this update, the simplest is to install via the Autodesk Desktop App itself.

For those that wish to download, you must log in to accounts.autodesk.com.

I look forward to seeing what is new and improved!

I hope that you found this helpful.

Hello!

Here is an Autodesk Screencast that I had created to showed how to create and import base data for use within Civil 3D.
